Bay Area Children’s Portraits: Happy Birthday Haedan!

I absolutely love having the opportunity to photograph children as they grow. I’ve had the honor of photographing this little one when he was still in his Mama’s belly, and again as a newborn. He’s now celebrating his first birthday; amazing how the time flies!

In the photo below, little Haedan is he’s wearing a hanbok, the traditional Korean dress clothes worn during traditional festivals and celebrations. I think the saturated colors of his outfit set against this verdant landscape is truly a stunning combination.

We did the photo shoot at one of my favorite locations, Mills College in Oakland, which also happens to be my alma mater. It’s like a photo playground for me, with so many great backdrops full of interesting color and texture. These long summer days are the perfect time to be out capturing images. Plus, giving kids some nature to interact with always keeps them interested!

Maternity and Baby Portrait Session with Nicole Martin & Fiona

Back in December, I was attending the monthly National Association of Women Business Owners networking breakfast along with friend and client, Julie Baeder (who I had the opportunity to photograph when she was named as one of the 100 of Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business; go Julie!) Julie immediately brought me over to meet her fabulous pilates instructor friend, Nicole Martin. It turns out that Nicole is the owner of Ritual Pilates in Oakland. Nicole and I clicked right away and started working together shortly after. I’ve been wanting to try pilates for a while. She is an amazing instructor and our weekly sessions are often the highlight of my week’s exercise routine.  I’m getting taller!!

Shortly after Nicole became my pilates instructor, she asked me to capture her maternity photos as she was expecting her first baby in April! Of course I agreed. We met for the session in her charming home in Montclair. Nicole’s adorable kitty cat, Rose, joined us for a few photos as well. At the end of the session, we agreed that when baby Fiona arrived we would get together again and photograph the little baby girl.

The second session took place when little Fiona turned 3 months. When I arrived at Nicole’s, we looked for a beautiful place to do the photos. The wonderful mid-century modern chair caught my eye as we looked around the living room. We both agreed that it’s clean wood lines and white leather upholstery would be perfect for the shoot and comfortable for baby Fiona. Don’t you agree?

Family Photography: San Francisco Bay Area

For many portrait photographers like myself, family photography is a truly a pleasure.  I love the opportunity to document the unique character of each child and to capture the family relationship…..immense love!  First I consult my clients to develop family photography ideas that resonate with their personal style.  Then we have a fun family photo shoot that allows them to express their personalities perfectly.

For this session the white seamless studio look was a perfect foil for the bold graphic red, white, and black theme they chose for their wardrobe.  Want to learn more about choosing colors for your outfits?  Check out this in-depth introduction to the Color Wheel.  If that one is too involved, here’s a basic Guide to Matching Colors.  Outfits for family photography should reflect your family’s authentic style, so there is no right answer about what to wear. Elegant neutrals; bold primary colors; eclectic mixed patterns?  Anything goes, as long as it’s thoughtfully selected (that doesn’t mean it has to be match-y) and reflects your style.

By using negative space in the composition and not over-posing the family, I created a dynamic collection of images that feel modern and crisp as well as relaxed and playful. Family photography in the studio doesn’t have to look traditional or conservative! Give me a call and we’ll come up with some fun family portrait ideas that work for your family photography.  Every family is different; we’ll find the style that works for you.  Portrait photographers should use their skills to represent who you are, not impose their style on you.

By the way, check out the eyelashes on this little one in the first image; I think they’re some of the longest I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been doing family photography for years!  Wow!  Thank you to this wonderful family for choosing me as your family photographer!

Bay Area Family Portraits

I’ve had a wonderful fall; lots of outdoor family portrait sessions with clients who I have the pleasure of seeing every year.  It’s a real honor and a treat(!) for me to see the kids growing up, and to be able to document these years as they fly by.  This charming girl has been in front of my camera since she was a baby, and it is truly amazing to see her engaging with the world as a little person!  More to come, but here’s a favorite for now.  Childlike wonder?  Check.
